Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro Leak Reveals Design, OS Support, and eSIM Features
The much-anticipated Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are expected to launch in the coming months. While Google has not officially confirmed details about the new Pixel series, a recent leak has given us an early glimpse at the Pixel 8 Pro’s design and possible new features.
Pixel 8 Pro Image Briefly Spotted on Google’s Website
An image of what appears to be the Pixel 8 Pro was briefly visible on Google’s official Subscriptions & Services promo page. The image was first spotted by X (formerly Twitter) user @android_setting and later shared by Android expert Mishaal Rahman before being taken down by Google.
The leaked render shows the phone in a Porcelain White color variant. While it closely resembles the Pixel 7 Pro at first glance, there are some notable design changes. Most prominently, the rear camera module now appears as a single pill-shaped island housing all three lenses, unlike the segmented design seen on last year’s model.
Triple Camera Setup With New Sensor Placement
The image suggests the Pixel 8 Pro will continue with a triple rear camera system, potentially including a telephoto lens — just like its predecessor. However, an additional unknown sensor can be seen next to the LED flash. Due to the low resolution of the image, it's unclear what function this sensor serves, but it could hint at new imaging or depth features.
In the Pixel 7 Pro, Google combined hardware and software through features like Super Res Zoom, offering high-quality zoom photography. It’s likely that the Pixel 8 Pro will build on this with enhanced computational photography capabilities.
Up to 5 Years of OS Updates for Pixel 8 Series
According to a report by 9to5Google, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro may come with up to 5 years of Android OS updates. This would be a significant upgrade from previous Pixel models, which typically received 3 years of OS and 2 years of security updates.
If this new policy is implemented, Google would outperform Samsung, OnePlus, and Oppo, who currently offer 4 years of OS updates and an additional year of security support on select devices.
Pixel 8 Could Launch as eSIM-Only in Some Regions
Another interesting development is the reported removal of the physical SIM card slot in the Pixel 8 series in favor of eSIM-only support, at least in certain regions. This would align Google with Apple, which already introduced eSIM-only models in the U.S. with the iPhone 14 series.
eSIM technology allows users to connect to mobile networks without needing a physical SIM card, offering improved convenience and better water and dust resistance for smartphones.
